Every public policy that Congress enacts has an impact on each generation. American seniors, Boomers, and Generation X and Y have become a part of the political lexicon when elected officials made decisions on how to allocate scarce resources.

With increasing frequency, Congress pits the interest of one generation over the interests of another. The most recent example occurred when Congress voted to fund expansion in the State Children’s Insurance Program, often referred to as the SCHIP program, with deep cuts in the funding for Medicare Advantage programs that serve millions of seniors in low-income and rural populations. Only a presidential veto stopped that terrible policy from becoming law, but Congress has not yet given up the battle yet.

The Social Security crisis demands a long-term fix, but battles between powerful lobbyists of seniors and other groups have made a solution unattainable. The financial security of every Boomer hangs in the balance as the battle for how much of the pie is going to be sliced in favor of seniors over Boomers, for vice versa.

The time has come for every generation to speak out and let their collective voices be heard for public policies that respect the needs of each generation, and forge solutions that responsibly protect the interests of each generation.
